Up at the pointy end

The trouble with being up at the pointy end of Derbyshire is the weather forecast.

Eddie Mair (you either love him or hate him, apparently – for me, it’s All Hail and Bow Down) did a bit on the PM programme (or was it iPM?) where everybody had to write in and say which part of the UK was never mentioned on the weather forecast, and by definition was going to be Their Bit. Well Edinburgh won, despite it being included in Northeast Scotland. And it’s true that Northwest Scotland gets more mentions. They have more Outlandish Weather for a start. However, this little bit of Derbyshire is never, ever mentioned. It lies between West Yorkshire, the Midlands to the south, and the Northwest. According to the PM weather map it’s East Midlands. I beg your pardon? I’m fifteen miles east of Manchester, max.

It is none of the above.

The best you can do is listen to the shipping forecast and hedge your bets between Irish Sea and Humber. If the wind’s westerly, take more notice of Irish Sea. If it’s easterly, go for Humber. If it’s southerly you can relax, and If it’s northerly you can batten down and stuff newspapers into doorframes.    Simples!

(ps for the benefit of my nieces and nephews in the farthest Far East - there's this advert on the telly - involves meerkats and car insurance - on second thoughts never mind, another time .....)
